room spray on kitchen shelfRoom freshener sprays with essential oils do more than just make your home smell good. They also infuse the air with the benefits of the essential oils used in the spray. You don’t have to worry about toxic chemicals or any other adverse effects when you make your own freshener sprays as these use all-natural ingredients only.

Making your own room freshener sprays with essential oils is surprisingly simple and doesn’t take more than a few minutes. It’s an incredibly versatile DIY project too. You can choose any essential oil or blend to use in the spray to fill the room with a certain scent or to create an atmosphere that is energetic in the morning and relaxing at night.

Make several bottles with different essential oils and keep on in each room so you can spritz the space whenever you want. You’ll want to use different essential oils for different rooms. Scroll below for room freshener spray recipes plus options for different rooms.

To make your own room freshener spray, you’ll need just a few ingredients and a dark-colored glass spray bottle to keep it in.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN ROOM FRESHENER WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

What you’ll need to make room freshener with essential oils:

  • 8-ounce Dark-Colored, Glass Spray Bottle
  • 3 tablespoons Witch Hazel or 2 tablespoons vodka
  • 6 tablespoons Filtered Water
  • 25-30 drops of Essential oils of your choice (Scroll below for recipes)

Add the water and witch hazel (or vodka) into the spray bottle.

Add 15-25 drops of essential oil depending on how strong a scent you want.

Shake gently to allow all the liquids to mix well.

You can always add more or fewer drops of essential oil if you want a stronger or milder scent.

Shake the bottle gently each time before using the spray to make sure the essential oil is evenly distributed in the liquid.

The above recipe is for one bottle of room freshener spray. If you want to make a larger quantity for different rooms or to give away as gifts, just double or triple the recipe. Halve the quantities for a smaller bottle of spray.

Why Use Witch Hazel or Vodka in Your DIY Room Freshener Spray?

That’s a question I’m always asked when I give anyone my recipe for making a room freshener spray with essential oils.

Oils and water don’t mix so if you just add oils and water, the oil will float on top of the water. When you use the spray, the first few times you will get a very powerful aroma of the oils floating on the water. Later on, you will only get the spray of water without any scent.

Witch hazel and vodka act as facilitators. They help the water and oil mix properly so the liquid becomes one homogenous blend that disperses more evenly into the air.

Witch Hazel also helps the aroma linger longer in the air.

You can use any brand of witch hazel but this USDA certified organic witch hazel from Zongle Therapeutics is the one I use when making room sprays.  As you’ll be inhaling the aromas of the room spray, it’s always advisable to use the best quality you can find.  Zongle Therapeutics is a reputed brand and their products are always high quality.

Cheap vodka works just as well as the more expensive brands so don’t waste your money unless you are planning on pouring yourself a glass of vodka occasionally. Just make sure that you buy the highest proof vodka that you can find.

Using the Right Type of Bottle is Important Too

Always use a dark-colored, glass bottle for storing your essential oils and all your essential oil-based products.

Using glass bottles is recommended because glass is impervious to essential oils. Your room spray will retain its aroma and therapeutic properties longer when stored in a glass bottle. Plastic destroys the therapeutic properties of essential oils and is not recommended for storing essential oil-based products.

The dark color is because exposure to sunlight causes the therapeutic properties of the oils to deteriorate faster. If you use a transparent glass bottle, make sure to store it in a cool, dark place away from the sun to prevent it from deteriorating.

ROOM SPRAY WITH ESSENTIAL OILS RECIPES

room freshener spray Experimenting with different scents is the best part about making your own room sprays with essential oils.

These are some of my favorite scents for different times of the day or different rooms in the house:

  • Refreshing and energeticLemonor Peppermint for mornings
  • Restful and relaxing Lavender, Chamomile, or Rose for the bedroom
  • Cheerful and uplifting Orange, Bergamot, or Grapefruit for the family room
  • Herbaceous oils such as Thyme, Rosemary, or Marjoram for the kitchen and dining areas

If you prefer more complex aromas, use these essential oil blends instead of single essential oils in your room sprays:

Relaxing Vibes Blend to Help You Unwind & Relax

10 drops Lavender
9 drops Vetiver
7 drops Vanilla

Relaxing Bedroom Blend 2

10 drops Lavender
10 drops Chamomile
8 drops Vetiver

Lavender, chamomile, vetiver, and vanilla all work wonderfully to reduce anxiety and promote better sleep.

Keep a room spray with this blend in the bedroom and spritz a little around your bed. Inhaling the calming aromas will help you wind down before bedtime.

Mood-Boosting Blend to Cheer You Up

10 drops Orange
6 drops Lemon
6 drops Peppermint
5 drops Eucalyptus

The citrusy scents of orange and lemon are cheerful, uplifting, and energizing. Cheerful citrus scents combined with eucalyptus and peppermint will create a scent that’s invigorating and refreshing. A room spray with this blend will lift up your spirits on the dreariest of days.

Clean, Deodorizing Blend to Overpower Unpleasant Odors

15 drops Cinnamon
12 drops Tea Tree
7 drops Clove

All of these essential oils have powerful antibacterial properties. They are also all strong-smelling oils. Both of these properties work well together to freshen up and de-odorize a musty-smelling closet or bathroom.

Energizing Blend for Mornings or Your Home Office

12 drops Orange
10 drops Grapefruit
8 drops Lemon

This is an interesting spray that combines three citrus essential oils with distinctly different aromas. The sweet aroma of orange balances the tart scents of grapefruit and lemon for a wonderfully energizing scent that’s neither too sweet nor too sharp.

Stay Focused Blend

15 drops Rosemary
10 drops Peppermint

Rosemary essential oil has a stimulating, invigorating aroma that helps you stay focused and alert. However, its herbaceous-camphorous aroma can be a tad bit overpowering when diffused by itself. The addition of peppermint gives the blend a burst of freshness.

Breathe Better Blend

15 drops Basil
12 drops Eucalyptus
7 drops Peppermint

Eucalyptus has been praised for its powerful decongestant properties. Inhaling its strong camphorous aroma can help with a stuffy nose and chest congestion. Basil also has decongestant properties, although not as powerful as Eucalyptus. Peppermint essential oil injects a fresh scent into the blend.

Aphrodisiac Blend

10 drops Rose
8 drops Patchouli
8 drops Sandalwood
2 drops Ylang Ylang

Rose and patchouli have powerful aphrodisiac aromas and work well to set the mood in the bedroom. The addition of sandalwood and ylang ylang add some complexity to the room spray so the floral aroma is not so overpowering

Anti-Anxiety Blend

10 drops Vetiver
6 drops Lavender
5 drops Ylang Ylang

All three aromas in this blend are known to reduce anxiety and foster a sense of calm. While each of these can be used by itself, blending all three results in a complex aroma that’s even more pleasant.

Sweet Dreams Blend

8 drops Lavender
4 drops Cedarwood
4 drops Vetiver

or

8 drops Juniper Berry
8 drops Bergamot
2 drops Vetiver

All of these are relaxing essential oils. Some are known for their sedative properties. A light mist of any of these two room sprays around bedtime, can help you relax, unwind, and fall asleep more easily.

Pet Odor Eliminating Blend

10 drops Cedarwood
5 drops Tea Tree

Pet odor is often more marked during the fall and winter months when the windows are rarely opened so all the smells stay inside. Misting the room with this blend will overcome those disagreeable scents so the room smells cleaner and fresher.
