What Causes Puffy Eyes?

Excessive fluid retention in the surrounding skin tissue is the main cause of puffiness. Because the skin around the eye area is thin and delicate, any swelling or discoloration becomes even more prominent in the form of puffy eyes and discoloration.

So why does fluid accumulate in this area? Several factors could contribute including:

  • Excessive salt intake: This can cause the fluid to build up, causing under-eye puffiness.
  • Lack of sleep: Insufficient rest can disrupt the body’s natural regeneration process, resulting in swollen eyes.
  • Allergies: Allergic reactions often cause inflammation and congestion, contributing to puffiness.
  • Aging: As we age, the skin around the eyes becomes thinner and less elastic, allowing for more fluid retention.
  • Genetics: A predisposition to puffy eyes can be inherited but there are things you can do to minimize the puffiness. It may require extra persistence and consistency but it can be done.

Understanding the root cause of your puffy eyes can help you develop an effective treatment plan.

While using this homemade coffee eye cream can help, you may need to do more. Incorporating lifestyle changes and other skin-care practices can significantly reduce puffiness and perk up tired eyes.

Homemade Coffee Eye Cream Recipe

Ingredients

Ingredients for making homemade coffee eye cream - coffee infused oil, beeswax pastiles, cacao butter, and essential oil bottle

6 tablespoons Homemade Coffee Infused Oil (DIY instructions)
3 tablespoons Beeswax Pellets
3 tablespoons Cacao Butter
10 drops Coffee Essential Oil
Amber Glass Container

Optional ingredients: 10 drops Vitamin E oil. Although not necessary, vitamin E oil helps extend the shelf life of homemade skincare products.

If you don’t want to use cacao butter, shea butter works just as well in this coffee under eye cream recipe.

This makes around 3-4 ounces.

How To Make Coffee Eye Cream: Step-By-Step

Step by step: Ingredients for DIY coffee eye cream with coffee infused oil, beeswax pastiles, cacao butter, and essential oil bottle

Get detailed instructions on how to make coffee infused oil the right way.

Step 1

Put the cacao butter, beeswax, and coffee infused oil in a double boiler and keep it to simmer or on a low setting in the microwave. Don’t rush this step by melting the ingredients on high heat.

Using a double boiler on a gentle simmer or a low microwave setting is important to allow the ingredients to melt gently to prevent overheating and damaging the ingredients.

Using a double boiler provides more control over the melting process.

Step 2

After all the ingredients have completely melted, take the container off the heat, stir gently to mix the ingredients evenly, and leave it aside to cool.

As the mixture cools, it will start to solidify. When it has partly solidified, whip the cream using a mixer.

Step 3

Add your essential oils to the cooled-down mixture. Never add essential oils to the hot mix. Heat damages the volatile properties of essential oils.

Spoon your homemade coffee under eye cream into a dark-colored glass container.

How To Use Your Homemade Coffee Under Eye Cream

Maximize the benefits of your coffee under-eye cream and avoid irritating the delicate skin around your eyes with these tips:

Be gentle: Use your ring finger to gently dab the cream around your eye area. The ring finger is typically the weakest and reduces the risk of pulling on the skin.

Pat, don’t rub: Gentle application is key when using a coffee under eye cream. This helps prevent irritation and premature aging around the delicate eye area.

Less is more: Use a tiny amount of product. A little goes a long way!

Avoid the waterline: Don’t apply the cream too close to your lash line or inside the eye.

Pro tip: Store your coffee eye cream in the refrigerator for an extra cooling sensation and potentially faster results. The cold cream can help reduce puffiness and awaken tired eyes.

Pro tip 2: Use coffee eye cream in the morning. While most skincare routines focus on nighttime application, reserve this one for mornings. Firstly, puffy eyes don’t matter when you’re asleep! Secondly, the cream could seep into your eyes or transfer to your pillow.

Benefits Of Each Ingredient In This Coffee Eye Cream Recipe

Caffeine: The Energizer for Your Eyes

Caffeine, the active ingredient in coffee, is a well-known stimulant. It is also packed with antioxidants known to combat free radicals and reduce damage from oxidative stress and UV rays.

When applied topically around the eyes, its stimulant properties energize the eyes while its antioxidant properties protect the delicate skin around the eyes from environmental damage.

Caffeine also constricts blood vessels, helping to tighten skin and diminish the appearance of puffy under-eye bags.

Beeswax: Nature’s Skin Protector

Beeswax is a natural emollient that creates a protective barrier on the skin. It helps to:

  • Lock in moisture, preventing dehydration and dryness, which can contribute to under-eye wrinkles
  • Create a smooth texture, giving the eye cream a luxurious feel and making it easy to apply
  • Provide gentle support, helping to temporarily firm and tighten the skin around the eyes

Cacao Butter: The Ultimate Moisturizer

Cacao butter is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants. It offers numerous benefits for the skin, including:

  • Deep hydration, which nourishes dry and flaky skin around the eyes
  • Anti-inflammatory properties, which help to soothe irritated skin and reduce redness
  • Shield the delicate eye area from environmental stressors

Essential Oil: An Aromatic Boost + Benefits

Adding essential oils can enhance the benefits of the eye cream. I used Coffee Essential Oil for an extra antioxidant boost but you can experiment with other options.

Lavender and Chamomile are the best essential oils to use in this coffee eye cream recipe. Both essential oils are great for the skin and are used in a wide range of skincare products.

Note: Always use high-quality, pure coffee essential oil and conduct a patch test before applying it to the delicate eye area.

Customization for Different Skin Types

The best part about this coffee eye cream recipe is you can customize it for your skin type.

Dry Skin? Increase shea butter: Shea butter is a natural moisturizer that can deeply hydrate the skin. You can add up to 1 tablespoon of shea butter to the recipe for an extra boost of hydration.

Oily Skin? Reduce cacao butter: Cacao butter is a richer butter, so consider using slightly less. Start with 2 tablespoons in this recipe and see how your skin feels.

Clogged Pores? Reduce cacao butter slightly: While cacao butter is moisturizing, it can also be slightly comedogenic (meaning it can clog pores). If you have dry skin, you might be able to tolerate the full amount, but reducing it slightly can help if you’re prone to clogged pores.

Coffee Under Eye Cream Expected Shelf Life & Storage Tips

Homemade skincare products typically have a shorter shelf life compared to commercial products. To be safe, use your coffee under-eye cream within 5 – 6 months of making it.

Pay attention to any changes in texture, color, or smell, as these could indicate spoilage.

For optimal results and to maintain the quality of your DIY coffee under-eye cream:

Store in a cool, dark place. Avoid exposing the eye cream to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. A bathroom cabinet is generally not ideal due to humidity and temperature fluctuations.

Use a dark-colored glass container. Glass is the only material that will not interact with the ingredients and compromise their properties. And the dark glass protects the coffee under eye cream from the damaging effects of excessive light expore.

Ensure the container you use is thoroughly cleaned and dried before storing the eye cream. Moisture attracts mold, causing the cream to spoil immediately.

One of the most common questions I get asked is ‘Is it safe to use coffee on the delicate under-eye area?’

When used in a diluted form like a cream, coffee is generally safe for the under-eye area. Remember to do a patch test before applying it to your skin when using any new skincare product.

Patch Testing

It’s advisable to perform a patch test before applying any new skincare product to your face. This is especially important for products containing essential oils, as they can cause skin irritation in some individuals.

To patch test: Apply a small amount of the eye cream to a hidden area of skin, like the inside of your elbow or behind your ear. Wait 24-48 hours to check for any signs of redness, itching, or irritation. If you experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use of the product.

Natural Remedies To Reduce Puffy Eyes

While your coffee under-eye cream is a fantastic DIY solution, combining it with other natural remedies can enhance its effectiveness:

Apply cucumber slices: Cucumber slices offer a refreshing and cooling sensation to tired eyes. Their hydrating properties help to reduce puffiness, while the chilled temperature constricts blood vessels, minimizing the appearance of under-eye bags.

Use cold compresses: One of the quickest and most effective ways to reduce puffiness is by applying a cold compress to the under-eye area. The cold temperature helps constrict blood vessels, reducing swelling and creating a de-puffing effect. To create a cold compress, dampen a clean cloth with cold water and gently apply it to your eyes for a few minutes.

Stay hydrated: Hydration is key to combating puffiness. Dehydration can contribute to fluid retention, making under-eye circles and puffiness more prominent. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin hydrated, reducing the appearance of puffiness.

Get sufficient sleep: Prioritize getting enough restful sleep to allow your skin to repair itself. When you don’t get enough sleep, the body’s natural regeneration process gets disrupted, resulting in puffy eyes.

Apply aloe vera gel: Known for its soothing and hydrating properties, aloe vera can help calm irritated skin and reduce puffiness.

Apply chamomile or green tea bags: Green tea and chamomile have proven anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe tired eyes. Placing cooled tea bags over your eyes reduces swelling and inflammation.

Consistency is key when it comes to skincare. Regular application of the coffee eye cream, combined with natural remedies and healthy lifestyle habits, can help significantly improve the appearance of your under-eye area.
