Every season has its own distinctive scents and sounds, and winter is no exception. The refreshing scent of fir trees lingers in the air right through this season. During those freezing wintry days when it’s too cold to step out, there’s nothing better than diffusing wonderful winter wood and forest scents created by blending a few select essential oils.

Woody Winter Scents

The woody winter scents include all essential oils extracted from leaves and parts of winter trees such as Cypress, Fir, Pine, and Cedarwood essential oils. All of these belong to the woody aroma family in essential oils.

While each of these essential oils is great to use on their own, creating blends with these oils as the base cuts down on the excessive ‘woodiness’ and elevates the aroma.

Below you will find a few blend recipes using woody essential oils.

Earthy Winter Scents

Essential oils with earthy scents are also hugely popular during the winter season.

Patchouli, Valerian, and Angelica are some of the more popular essential oils that belong in this category. These oils smell of the forest too but unlike the winter forest aromas, these have a distinctively earthy note.

The Scent of Cypress

Although Cypress belongs to the woody aroma family, it deserves special mention. Of all the winter forest aromas, this is the scent that most resembles that of a freshly chopped Christmas tree.

Cypress has a more subtle scent that’s not quite as strong as pine or fir. This makes it a great woody essential oil for creating wintry blends.

When you’re creating essential oil blends that resemble a wooded or forest area, you don’t want to limit yourself to only woody scents. These provide a good starting base, but you do need some additional scents to add complexity to the blend and lift the aroma. Think about it, when you walk through the woods in winter, it isn’t just the trees you smell. You also smell the crisp winter air, the citrus fruits, and the flowers. Adding some spicy, fruity, and floral oils to the blend will give you that effect.

Some scents that work great with woody scents are wild orange, lemon, Frankincense, Myrrh, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

How To Use Your Winter Wood And Forest Scents

The easiest way to fill your home with your wonderful winter wood and forest scents is by adding a few drops of any of the above blends to your diffuser.  Use one of the large-room diffusers if you’re diffusing the blend in a large space. For smaller spaces, any of these small-space diffusers will do just fine.
